What is a hex color code?

A hex color code is a 6-digit hexadecimal number preceded by #. The first two digits represent red, the middle two represent green, and the last two represent blue. For example, #FF0000 is pure red.

What is the difference between hex, RGB, and HSL?

Hex uses hexadecimal notation (#FF5733). RGB uses decimal values for red, green, and blue (rgb(255, 87, 51)). HSL uses hue (0-360), saturation (0-100%), and lightness (0-100%). They all describe the same colors in different formats.

Can I use shorthand hex codes?

Yes, if both digits of each pair are the same, you can use 3-digit shorthand. For example, #FF0099 can be written as #F09. The browser expands each digit: F becomes FF, 0 becomes 00, 9 becomes 99.
